The 27th Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has already started and will be hosted in Egypt from 6 to 18 November 2022. It also marks the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the UNFCCC.

Upon the hosting of COP27, let’s take the opportunity to revisit the main outcomes of COP26 last year:

  1. Countries agreed to a provision calling for a phase-down of coal power and a phase-out of “inefficient” fossil fuel subsidies.
  2. Countries finalized the operational details for the practical implementation of the Paris Agreement.
  3. Countries agreed to strengthen the Santiago Network that connects vulnerable countries with providers of technical assistance, knowledge and resources to address climate risks.
  4. 137 countries committed to halting and reversing forest loss and land degradation by 2030.
  5. 103 countries signed up to the Global Methane Pledge to limit methane emissions by 10% by 2030.

COP27 will build on the outcomes of COP26 to deliver action on an array of issues critical to tackling the emergency of climate change and the rising energy crisis.
